Doggy Treats

With recent outbreaks of tainted pet food and treats, cat and dog owners are growing concerned about what their furry friends are really eating. In addition to concerns about pet food ingredients and poor quality control, my own dog has an allergy that can make buying her food and treats very difficult. My Husky has a very sensitive tummy and gets tummy troubles from beef or red meat. Even if it's just a treat that is beef-flavored. Making her treats in my kitchen is rewarding for both of us. By making your own dog treats at home, you can rest easy knowing you used safe and natural ingredients. Is this your first time making homemade dog treats? Don't worry! It isn't difficult-- even if you don't normally cook or bake. This recipe uses basic ingredients and simple steps so your cute canine will be chowing down in no time.

Easy Treat Recipes

This homemade dog cookie recipe is super easy to make since it calls for ingredients readily available at most grocery stores. You might even have these ingredients on hand. The only item I didn't have was a cute bone-shaped cookie cutter While any cookie cutter will do, I wanted my home made dog treats to be shaped like traditional dog bones. I ordered mine on Amazon and it even came with a cute little card attached for another recipe for home made dog treats.

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 325° F.
  2. In large bowl, combine water, oats, margarine and bouillon cube. Let stand for 10 minutes. Grease cookie sheets.
  3. In separate bowl combine cornmeal, sugar, milk and egg. Mix well. Add this mixture to first bowl (after the ten minutes have passed for the first bowl).
  4. Mix ingredients well and fold in shredded cheese.
  5. Add flour gradually, about a cup at a time, mixing well with each addition. A stiff dough should form.
  6. Knead dough on lightly floured surface. Roll out to 1/2" thickness and cut with dog bone cookie cutter. Place bones on cookie sheet about an inch apart.
  7. Bake 30-40 minutes or until golden brown. Remove from oven and cool on rack before serving.

Heather Says

These all natural dog biscuits are easy to make and ready in no time. My husband helped me bake this batch while our dog sat by, patiently watching, because she knew they were for her. She loves cheese, so these treats are always a hit with her. I love knowing exactly what she's eating because I made her treats myself. I can pronounce every ingredient I used-- Do you know what kind of ingredients are in your dog's treats? Are you familiar with them? Would you eat them yourself? Feel free to taste test a biscuit before giving to your dog. I personally find them very plain tasting but the way Bowie goes ga-ga for them, you would think they were flavored like chocolate-covered steak.
